Rep Franklin Garners France’s Support for American Independence
Rep. Franklin set sail from Philadelphia for France in 1776, with a mission to negotiate and secure a formal alliance and treaty.
For the next year, Rep. Franklin made key partnerships with influential officials throughout France. France continued to secretly support the Patriot cause with shipments of war supplies, but it wasn’t until the American victory over the British at the Battle of Saratoga in October 1777 that France felt an American victory in the war was possible.
Rep. Franklin is now working to secure an official alliance with France to make the American victory a reality.
“It is a common observation here that our cause is the cause of all mankind, and that we are fighting for their liberty in defending our own.”
